SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCER :
  • An influencer is an individual who, through their presence on social media platforms,  has the power to affect purchase decisions of others because of their authority, knowledge, position or relationship with their audience.

When we view / listen or read the opinions of others we can use that information to help us make our own decisions about what we buy or do.  Advertisers use to help us make those decisions but in the age of the internet people are no longer forced to watch television ads or come across them when they read newspapers and magazines, even ads on the internet can be quickly deleted or fast forwarded. Advertisers have had to find new ways to get information to people about their products. One of these ways is through using people who are already on social media to help promote their products, sometimes these are through sponsorship, sometimes through product placement and free gifts for influencers.  It is often difficult to tell if a influencer has been paid to review a product or is doing it of their own choosing. In the UK laws have been introduced that ensure YouTubers must identify sponsored videos #ad   but this is not the case in many other countries.

When we view social media we need to be aware that people may not always be giving us unbiased opinions as more and more businesses take the opportunity to advertise using these social media influencers.
