Where would you live ?

In this unit of work we use geographical tools to help work out where our ideal living environment would be. We often have an idea about the type of lifestyle we want to live and the town or country we would like to live in - but sometimes these two elements don't match up. In this unit we examine which elements of the physical and social environment best suit our ideal location.

Some handy dandy resources:

Nomadlist.com - you can use this website to match locations to your criteria e.g. population, weather etc
World Political Map - this is a detailed map of countries, cities and towns

TASK ONE : REFLECTION AND CLIMATE GRAPHS

Task one - where would you live and climate graphs?
In this first task we have a bit of a think about the place that we would like to live and examine the elements of our environment, both physical and social, that we value.  You will be covering aspects from population size to sporting facilities and it's important to think about the priorities you place on elements of your life. Is being about to play football a deal breaker? Do you have to have fast internet or live by the beach? Everyone will be different. So think carefully about what you want in the place you live....

The second part of task one is to find some climate graphs of regions that fit the type of climate and environmental conditions you would prefer. If we look at a world map of climate regions we can see that different places around the world have similar climates.  So if you think you prefer a rainy tropical climate - you can choose from all the dark green regions such as Central South America, Central East Africa or most of Asia. If you are not sure of the names of the countries - click HERE for a detailed word political map

A climate graph is made up of two parts - The temperature of the location is shown by a line. The rainfall is shown by a column.

When you find a climate graph or are comparing graphs you will need to make sure that the temperature scales are the same - some may just be in Farenheit  (F) - some may be Celsius (C).  The rainfall is usually always in millimetres.
If you click on the Finding Statistics in my Youtube channel and look in the description you can find the place in the video which talks about climate graphs. If you are interested in creating your own climat graph you can also view THIS VIDEO on my channel which looks at using Numbers ( mac version of excel) to create the climate graph

TASK TWO : PARTY ALL NIGHT....

Task two - What entertainment would you want?
We all like to do different things in our spare time,  some like to be active and play sports or climb mountains, other prefer quieter pursuits. These things can often change with age and circumstances so think about the place you would like to be once you have left school and are able to choose your own  location.  Hopefully by now you have chosen your 'ideal' location so this is where you start to see if it matches your expectations...

TASK THREE : THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT

Week Two: Task three - The Physical environment

In this task you will be examining the physical nature of your ideal location by looking at a topographic map of the region. Topographic maps show the landforms and features of a region. Below are some examples of  topographics map.  Notice how some maps will show contour lines and others just show shading to represent features. If there is just shading you will need to make sure you look at the key to understand the colours. Generally though the darker the brown - the higher the ground - and darker green represents lower levels of land.

You may also find it useful to search for 'physical' maps of regions to show just land features, Google earth images will also work to show the physical features of a region.

The second part of the task asks you to find political maps - these are simply maps that show the borders and political regions of a country - they may also show major cities and landforms.

Week three: Task four - Your own choice comparison

Week four and five : RESEARCH TASK ASSIGNMENT SHEET

RESEARCH TASK LESSONS:

LESSON ONE: Climate

1. Choose 4 people from the sheet that you will be trying to locate.
2. Read through the information for each one and write down the climate preferences for each one in the first box of the worksheet.
3. Find a world climate map. wikipedia has a simple one you can use.
4. Write down the names of the regions/ countries that match the information you have written in the first box for each person.
5. In the last box explain why you have chosen these areas and which you think, at this stage might suit the person ( read through some of the other information given about them)

Hand up at the end of the lesson.
